Morgane Cadieu talks about her new book, On Both Sides of the Tracks, which examines the figures who move between social classes. Focusing on recent French novels and autobiographies, she offers a fresh critical look at tales of social emancipation in the work of Annie Ernaux, Kaoutar Harchi, Michel Houellebecq, Édouard Louis, and Marie NDiaye, among others, shedding fascinating light on upward mobility today as a formal, literary problem.
Morgane Cadieu is an Associate Professor of French at Yale University. She specializes in 20th- and 21st-century French and Francophone prose, experimental fiction, materialist philosophies (especially atomism and feminism), spaces studies, narratives of social emancipation and migration, and the aesthetics of trains.
Aubrey Gabel is Assistant Professor of French and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Columbia.
Hannah Freed-Thall is Associate Professor of French Literature, Thought, and Culture at NYU.
