Eric Fassin, introduced by Camille Robcis and George Chauncey Gender studies have long faced indifference. But today, they are confronted with two symmetrical problems: instrumentalization and rejection. On the one hand, the rhetoric of “sexual democracy” has been mobilized for xenophobic and racist purposes. On the other hand, reactionaries attack the so-called “ideology of gender.” Which is more threatening? Eric Fassin is Professor of Sociology in the Departments of Political Science and Gender Studies, Paris-8 University Vincennes – Saint-Denis, Laboratoire d’etudes de genre et de sexualite (CNRS). This event is co-sponsored by the Columbia Maison Francaise, the Columbia Research Initiative on the Global History of Sexualities, and the Insitute for Research on Women, Gender, and Sexuality.
