A Talk by François Weil
François Weil offers a deeper look and analysis of the student strikes that have broken out in France over the past weeks. What are the festering problems in the French education system that have led to such large spread frustration and pushed students to the brink? What do the student strikes – and their spread to parents, unions, and other groups – say not only about the endemic challenges in schools, but about the government budgetary crisis, political stasis, and fraying of the French welfare state?
A French historian of the U.S., François Weil served as President of EHESS, rector of the Academy and Chancellor of the Universities of Paris, senior advisor to the Prime Minister for Education, Higher Education, and Research, and chief of staff of the Minister of Education and Higher Education. He is now a Councillor of State. Among his books are A History of New York (Columbia UP, 2004) and Family Trees. A History of Genealogy in America (Harvard UP, 2013).
